Water scarcity emerging as a global economic threat

Water scarcity is fast emerging as the most impactful component of the wider climate crisis. Asian economies like India and China will be the most affected by these water shortages. India only has enough water resources for 4% of its people despite holding 18% of the world’s population. Also, 80% to 90% of China’s groundwater is unfit for consumption.

Water scarcity can affect the rates of urbanization in developing countries in several ways, including:

  • Affecting old industries like steel making
  • Impacting newer industries like the manufacturing of semiconductor chips
  • Slowing down the transition to clean energy
