US companies conceal their environmental impact

The Securities and Exchange Commission is working on new criteria for corporate environmental disclosure. This could have a big impact on a lot of corporations in the U.S. that currently don’t report anything about their environmental or climatic impact.

Certain industries appear to have a higher rate of disclosures. Utilities and personal products had the most disclosures, with an average rate of eight and seven, respectively. Because of the scrutiny they face, oil and gas businesses, as well as other industries that release a lot of greenhouse gases, score high.

The new SEC standards are designed to ensure that performance is consistent, allowing data to be trustworthy.
