Electric vehicles made in China are proving to be not so environmentally friendly

The debate is growing over how environmentally friendly electric vehicles (EV) truly are, given the carbon emissions generated during their production and in power grids used to charge their batteries. A sizeable chunk of EV batteries are produced in coal-heavy China, which dominates the entire downstream EV battery supply chain.

The reasons why EV supply chains are in urgent need for decarbonization include:

  • The extra time taken by EV motors to repay their carbon debt relative to an ICE car
  • The need for EV and battery supply chains to adopt renewable energy
  • The need to improve technology to reduce consumption and increase the recycling rate of mineral resources to decrease reliance on primary raw materials
