Despite La Niña, 2021 saw ocean warming throughout the year

According to a report published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, on January 11, using the IAP/CAS and NCEI/NOAA datasets, the world’s oceans were the hottest ever recorded by humans, through 2021, with a year-over-year increase in the ocean heat content. Below are some key points:

  • This new finding follows climate change models of warming trends
  • There’s a direct connection between Greenhouse Gases produced from human activities and this is on the rise despite short term changes due to El Niño and La Niña
  • Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans were shown to be warming the fastest
