Climate Ambition Summit for 2023 announced by UN chief

With the totemic 1.5C global warming goal “gasping for breath,” UN Secretary General António Guterres has announced plans to conduct a worldwide Climate Ambition Summit in September of next year in an effort to “accelerate the pace of change” before the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai in November.

The top diplomat in the world cautioned in a speech at the UN’s headquarters that “country climate plans are falling dreadfully short,” despite modest progress at recent international conferences on biodiversity and climate change.

The COP27:

  • Established funds to support nations suffering from climate-related loss
  • Failed to make little progress on reducing gas emissions
  • Failed to enhance national climate action plans
