Wildfires may rise by 50% by 2100 according to UNEP

The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) released a report on February 23, 2022, citing cites evidence of an increase of 50% in wildfires correlated to climate change.

  • USD 71.1 billion to 347.8 billion in 2016 is the annual cost of wildfires to the US economy with just 0.2% spent on prevention and planning
  • Wildfire frequency and intensity correlated to the RCP pathway
  • Spending on risk mitigation was found to significantly reduce the economic costs wildfires incur
