Renewable technologies like solar and wind power are cheaper than the fossil fuels that are driving climate change. The world needs to ensure that the transformation of energy systems to renewable energy is done on priority. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has consistently called for an end to all international public and private funding of fossil fuels.
The Climate Ambition Summit, which is scheduled for 20 September 2023 at the UN Headquarters in New York, will discuss how to accelerate the transformation to renewable energy. There are several ways through which this acceleration can take place, including:
- Shifting energy subsidies away from fossil fuels to renewable energy
- Increasing the investments in renewables
