NGOs call out the chip-making energy usage of TSMC

Environmental group Greenpeace and two other NGOs have called on the world’s largest contract chip maker, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), to reduce its massive carbon footprint. TSMC’s role in chip manufacturing has come under scrutiny amid growing concerns about the environmental impact of the semiconductor supply chain. TSMC contracts with the biggest tech companies in the world, including Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft.

The environmental impact of the global semiconductor manufacturing industry includes:

  • Consumption of 286 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity globally by 2030
  • On track to emit 86 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030
