New Zealand to pay for electric vehicles to reduce emissions

As part of their effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the New Zealand government announced that they are thinking of paying for cleaner hybrid or electric automobiles to assist lower-income families in replacing their outdated gas vehicles with cleaner ones. The strategy is a step toward New Zealand’s commitments under the 2016 Paris Agreement on climate change, along with the country’s declared aim of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The plan includes:

  • Subsidies for firms to reduce emissions
  • Transitioning to a 100% green bus fleet by 2050
  • Curbside food waste collection system for the vast majority
