Hydrogen is not yet a truly green fuel for Hong Kong’s public transport

Hydrogen is expected to debut as a clean-burning fuel on a pilot bus by the year-end in Hong Kong. Hydrogen fuel cell and battery-powered electric buses and vehicles form a key part of a plan to electrify transport, and it is a key plank of Hong Kong’s decarbonisation strategy. The city has set a target to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The challenges that face the mass commercialisation of hydrogen vehicles in Hong Kong include:

  • The technological and cost barriers involved in achieving the penetration targets for hydrogen vehicles
  • Supply chain challenges such as storage and transport of hydrogen
  • The absence of commercial hydrogen production facility in Hong Kong
