Households in the UK face extreme fuel poverty

Across the UK, around a million households are experiencing extreme fuel poverty. More than a fifth of their income now goes towards covering their energy bills due to chronically inefficient housing and soaring gas prices. A report from the campaign group Friends of the Earth warns that millions of households are still facing fuel poverty despite the government’s decision to extend its Energy Price Guarantee scheme by three months.

The government is facing repeated calls from the public to provide some relief measures, including:

  • Directing funding toward energy efficiency programs
  • Delivering on its promise to mobilize at least £9bn of investment in energy efficiency, this parliament
  • Introducing new policies to incentivize households to undertake energy-saving measures
