FTC imposing penalties on misleading ‘green’ marketing

The US Federal Trade Commission may propose consumer product environmental marketing restrictions, and if adopted, they might subject businesses to severe fines. Officials are looking for feedback from the public on non-binding guidelines for how businesses can make environmental marketing claims without breaking federal rules that forbid misleading advertising until February 21.

As per the agency guidelines: 

  • Companies should have evidence to back their environment friendly claims
  • Companies should strengthen their product descriptions
  • Companies should properly label their products to help individuals make informed decisions
