Emission rules slowing down ships

Many shipping companies are using aging fleets after the ambiguity over the use of fuels that add to greenhouse gas emissions. This may cause older vessels to sail on the slow lane, impacting the shipping capacity. From the start of the following year, all ships are required to calculate their annual carbon intensity depending on the emissions of the cargo they carry and demonstrate that it is steadily decreasing, as per the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

This new rule has:

  • Caused a decrease in the shipping capacity
  • Caused a surge in demand for new containers
  • Caused companies to test and order vessels that run on alternative fuels
