Coal plants are not the solution to China’s energy security issues

To enhance its energy security, China must invest more in grid infrastructure to improve its flexibility to cope with demand and supply. China approved 20.45GW of coal power in the first quarter. This was more than the 18.55GW in the whole of 2021. There was a power crisis that affected half of China in 2021 and another one last summer due to a drought-induced hydropower shortage.

Experts believe that China cannot rely on coal for much longer to answer the inefficiencies in its energy system since:

  • It risks climate disasters
  • Causes financial burden
  • It locks the nation into a high-carbon pathway
