China looks to curb carbon emissions as the economy rebounds

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said China would continue cutting the emission of major pollutants and also the energy intensity. The Chinese Premier wanted the country to focus more on green development and promote efficient and intensive use of resources. China aims to be carbon neutral by 2060, and to realize this target; it must integrate economic development and environmental protection.

The notable gains that China has made in tackling pollution and developing renewable energy include:

  • Some 86.5 percent of days in 2022 had good air quality in more than 300 Chinese cities
  • Over the past five years, the installed capacity of renewable energy has gone up from 650 gigawatts (GW) to 1,200GW
