China has the potential to lead in decarbonising the construction industry

According to new research by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), China, which is home to the world’s largest buildings construction industry chains, has the potential to make a significant contribution in decarbonising the sector over the next decade. China will need to spend $1.33 trillion on cutting construction-related carbon dioxide emissions. This target will help the world achieve global climate ambitions of net-zero emissions by 2050.

The challenges China faces while aligning its construction industry to global climate goals are:

  • China is responsible for 40 per cent of the 15 billion tonnes of global construction value chain carbon-dioxide emissions in 2022
  • Global climate goals would most probably not be met without a reduction in emissions from the construction and operation of buildings
